Dog training dictionary: Terms and definitions, oh my!
I’m a bit of a semantics nerd. Here’s a running list of terms we use when talking about our dog ownership and training—and what they mean to me!
First: Why is it worthwhile to define terms?
Sometimes we think we’re saying one thing, but our words take on different meaning to someone else… and that can result in tension (or even full-fledged arguments) simply because we don’t understand each other’s language. (You can read more about how we all come to the table with our own personal perceptions and associations in this article.)
I think the dog training world would be a much more harmonious place if we took the time to define our terms and make sure we were all on the same page word choice wise before chatting about different opinions.
