Scout the blue heeler sits in a blue lawn chair next to her owner. They face each other with open mouthed pants / smiles

A few years ago I wrote a poem about how I experience the world. The opening “I do not feel things in trickles or raindrops or teaspoons / I feel them in tidal waves and hurricanes” sums it up—high highs and low lows have been part of my life for as long as I can remember.

In many ways I like this about myself. My intensity, depth, and willingness to hold big emotions have birthed wonderful moments. Carved precious connections.

At the same time, living on a rollercoaster of ups and downs is not always healthy. Much like how Scout’s sensitivity is her best and worst trait, I think my own sensitivity is my best and worst, too.

Here are some reflections on how I’ve worked through emotional instability as a flaw… and also embraced it as an asset.
