Hi hi! Welcome to the second monthly recap since I moved the Paws and Reflect blog to Substack.
This is the only email I send to subscribers each month. Every other piece is posted here on the website (or in the Substack app, if that’s a thing you have downloaded). This way I don’t inundate your inboxes with all my rambles but still offer a round up all in one place so you can peruse anything you’ve missed.
As always, I’m here for feedback about what works best for you as a supporter. 🤗 Thank you for encouraging my writing (and overall life with Scout)!
🐺 Scout’s October highlights
I don’t have much new to say about our cattle dog. She’s in a lovely status quo: Spending time on public land (where she’s allowed to roam off leash largely to her heart’s content) seems to be her dream. She is confident and silly and playful with more personality than ever, according to Sean.
It’s lovely to feel so relaxed about this creature who once filled my days with unimaginable stress. I worry it’s boring to keep saying the same things… but I keep thinking them, over and over. There are no words for how much I love her.

🚐 Our October travel
We’ve spent the entire month in Utah. It’s our longest stretch in a single state (most of it within a few-hour drive in the southern portion) except for Wisconsin, where our families live, and Florida, where we called home before hitting the road.
Some of our favorite destinations included Capitol Reef National Park (and the incredible town of Torrey, home to the best ice cream I’ve ever eaten), the Grand Staircase–Escalante National Monument (with the best coffee shop view we’ve ever had), Moonscape Overlook near Hanksville, Goblin Valley State Park and Little Wild Horse Canyon, Moab (lots of hikes plus Arches and Canyonlands NPs), Valley of the Gods, and a special night not sleeping in the van when we backtracked to Torrey because we just can’t get enough of it.
