Scout the blue heeler plays fetch with a young woman in the living room of a house. Off to the side of the frame, a young baby watches from her father's lap

We just got back from a long weekend with my family. My parents, sister, and four-month-old niece Olive flew down to Florida to meet us at a cute riverside Vrbo. We spent our time kayaking, enjoying family meals, hiking to see manatees, and playing entirely too many games of Sorry! (which I’d completely forgotten about since childhood).

This was Scout’s second time being around Olive. I’m thrilled with how it went—but it wasn’t a success without some critical thinking and management. Here’s how we keep both our cattle dog and our niece safe, comfortable, and fulfilled when we spend time together.
