Does My Dog Want to Please Me? Yes and No

Haley, a blonde human, lies on her stomach in the shallow ocean water. Her Australian cattle dog, Scout, wades through the waves to approach her with a wagging tail.

On the one hand, I hate the idea that our dogs are perpetually willing servants who should always cater to the whims of us "superior" species. On the other, I also reject the notion that any social mammal is a purely self-serving heathen who only cares about the tangible things another creature can provide. I think the answer is somewhere in between. Here's my thought process.
