Haley, a blonde human, lies on her stomach in the shallow ocean water. Her Australian cattle dog, Scout, wades through the waves to approach her with a wagging tail.

I hate the idea that our dogs are perpetually willing servants who should always cater to the whims of our “superior” species.

I also reject the notion that any social mammal is a purely self-serving heathen who only cares about the tangible things (food, water, etc.) other creatures can provide.

The answer to “does my dog want to please me?” is somewhere in between yes and no. Here’s my thought process!
